River Oaks Chamber Orchestra Achieves Liftoff with Premiere of Celestial Erhu Concerto

11.10.2018

Texas Classical Review - In the hands of soloist Lin, the erhu proved a compelling musical protagonist Saturday. Lin spun out the solo line with nimbleness, lyrical poise and dramatic flair; sometimes he ratcheted up the urgency through a more intense vibrato.

Review: At Juilliard Festival, the Stunning Sounds of China Today

1.28.2018

NY Times - Guo Wenjing’s “Wild Grass” (2006), here in its Western Hemisphere premiere, is a concerto for erhu, a two-stringed fiddle played upright in the performer’s lap. Buskers in subway stations have made its penetrating sound familiar to many New Yorkers. As it happens, the Taiwanese-born violist Wei-Yang Andy Lin, who received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Juilliard, is also a virtuoso on the erhu, and he gave a brilliant performance.

NY Times -

Two Strings Attached

The Juilliard School’s annual festival of contemporary music, Focus!, set itself a fascinating problem this year with its concentration on Chinese composers. As the festival director, Joel Sachs, explains in the program book, many composers active in China continue to use traditional Chinese instruments, which Juilliard does not teach, and the whole point of the festival is to involve students. But in the concluding orchestral concert, on Friday, Wei-Yang Andy Lin, a viola student, will play the solo part in Guo Wenjing’s “Wild Grass,” a concerto for erhu, the traditional two-string fiddle, played upright. Mr. Lin’s virtuosity on the erhu is well displayed in this song, “Parting After Wedding.” JAMES R. OESTREICH

The Debussy was performed by violinists William Wei and Ji In Yang, violist Wei-Yang Andy Lin, and cellist Grace Ho.

Oberon's Gorve - Sunday July 19th, 2015 - The second in Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's 3-concert summer series took place on a sweltering day. Outdoors, people were wilting from the intense heat and humidity, but in the cool, classical cavern of Alice Tully Hall, another capacity audience drew both physical comfort and spiritual sustenance from a well-devised and admirably played programme.

Grieg, Extended Amphion String Quartet at Alice Tully Hall

1.26.2015

NY Times - One of the most striking features of Grieg’s String Quartet in G minor is the textural richness created by techniques including double stopping, in which two notes are played simultaneously. Given the work’s allure, it receives surprisingly infrequent airings. But listeners had a chance to admire the score’s many charms during a passionate performance by the Amphion String Quartet at Alice Tully Hall on Sunday evening, in a concert presented by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

A Nostalgia Ride With a Driving Ensemble Behind the Wheel

Amphion String Quartet Performs at Alice Tully Hall

4.1.2014

NY Times - At a single concert on Sunday at Alice Tully Hall, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s audience got what amounted to two recitals for the price of one. That was the good news.

The bad news was that the two had precious little to say to each other. The result was an oddly disjointed evening that felt less than the sum of its estimable parts.

Recital No. 1, featuring the focused, forceful young Amphion String Quartet, was an immersion in the sweaty afterglow of Romanticism in the first decades of the 20th century. Opening the concert were sharply detailed performances of two works that pushed forward Wagner’s lushly overripe chromaticism.

So, what better way to spend a Tuesday night than to attend the Carnegie Hall debut of one of CAG’s 2011 winners, the Amphion String Quartet?

A Master Puts a Spotlight on Young Players

10.30.2007

NY Times - Mr. Perlman, playing first violin, offered lines of supple charm in the opening Allegro, answered in kind by the violist Wei-Yang Andy Lin. Mr. Perlman’s execution was not always precise, but his deeply engaged playing still conveyed its long-familiar generosity. The two violists traded seats for the Adagio; then it was Molly Carr who echoed Mr. Perlman’s singing leads.
